About Glass
Most windows sold in Michigan , for better energy performance is built with double pane glass, also called insulated glass. The gap between the two panes acts as a thermal and sound barrier, reducing heat transfer and energy loss.
The glass can be a regular strength glass (also called annealed) or tempered glass(also called safety glass). Tempered glass is 4-5 times stronger against impact than annealed glass, and when broken it shutters to small, pebble like pieces instead of large shards of glass that can cause serious injury. Tempered glass is required in doors, windows lower than 18”to the floor, staircase windows, shower enclosures.
For better energy performance the glass can have a low-e coating (Low Emissivity). Transparent, microscopically thin coating is applied to the glass surface that increases energy efficiency by reflecting infrared heat to outside, making the room cooler.
